One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest

One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest is a play that is adapted from the book by Ken Kesey. It was first published in 1962 and adapted for the stage by Dale Wasswerman a year later.

Ken Kesey wrote the book against the background of the Cuban missile crisis, escalating violence in Vietnam and the black civil rights movement.  In the early 60’s Kesey was a student at Stanford University and he took part in military experiments looking into the effects of mind-altering drugs such as LSD, in psychiatric hospital south of San Francisco. He and other experimental subjects drawn for prisons and the military were paid $75 for taking part. He used his experiences in that hospital as the basis for his book.
